Water Conservation Program

Water Conservation

Water is Norman's greatest natural resource. Water is vital to our everyday lives at home, at work, and in our recreation activities. Each of use can play a role in preserving this resource.

Conserving Water Means

  • Lower water bills for our homes and businesses
  • Greater energy savings at home and at the office

  • A positive impact on the environment and the community

The typical person uses 45 to 50 gallons of water indoors per day and up to the same amount outside.

Conserving Water Indoors

  • Install water saving devices.
  • When filling the tub, do not let water run down the drain while waiting.
  • Place "toilet dams" or rock-filled containers in the tanks of conventional toilets.

  • Consider replacing current toilets with the new "low volume" toilets now on the market.
  • Repair leaks in your faucets and toilets.

  • Run dishwasher with full loads only.

Conserving Water Outdoors

  • Water outside only when necessary.
  • To maintain green, actively growing turfgrass throughout the season, most lawns require 1 to 1 ½ inches of water per week.
  • Water early in the morning to avoid evaporation losses.
  • Irrigate deeply, slowly and infrequently.
  • Avoid sprinklers that produce a fine mist; too much water is lost to evaporation & wind.

  • Sweep sidewalks and driveways instead of washing them down with a hose.

  • Do not water lawns or wash cars when water is in short supply.
  • When washing the car, rinse it once, use a bucket of soapy water to wash it, and then give it one more quick rinse.
  • Leave grass clippings in place. Clippings provide a mulch which reduces soil evaporation.
